Shri Sushanta Sinha, A Classical Bhajan and Ghazal Singer

Shri Sushanta Sinha, a Classical Bhajan and Ghazal Singer, is a disciple of renowned "Bhajan Samraat" Shri Anup Jalota. He is also known as "Chote Anup" or "Jr. Anup Jalota" for adopting the similar style of singing (gayaki) of Shri Anup Jalota, touching the heart of music lovers by his melodious and sweet voice. He belongs from Bishnupriya Manipuri Community and born in the village Abhanga(in Kamalpur) in the Dhalai District of Tripura. He was born on 07.01.1970 to Shri Sumanta Sinha (father) and Smt. Radhika Sinha (mother). He has inherited his family's tradition of singing where his father and grandfather were Bishnupriya Manipuri Singers known as "ISALPA" well known to the Bishnupriya Manipuri society for their contribution to keep alive the historic singing style and culture of Bishnupriya Manipuri.

Shri Sushanta Sinha (Sushant) is a "Classical Bhajan and Ghazal Singer" singing Bhajans and Ghazals in Hindi, Bishnupriya Manipuri and Bengali languages.

At the age of 12, Sushanta started singing by imitating songs and he was very much inspired from the Bhajans of Shri Anup Jalota like Bhajan Ganga, Bhajan Sandhyas etc. He developed his passion for singing and put his heart & soul in learning and singing Bhajans & Ghazals following the singing style of Shri Anup Jalota. According to Sushanta, Shri Anup Jalota was his inspiring idol and Sangeet Guruji (Mentor) or Guide though he never met Shri Anup Jalota at his tender age. Though he did not receive any formal training in Vocal, from the age of 16 years he started giving public stage solo performance of singing Bhajans Sandhyas, Ghazals, Thumris etc sung by Shri Jalota and other bhajans & songs in Hindi, Bishnupriya Manipuri and Bengali languages.

Sushanta had grown up in financial hardship in his childhood. He did his education upto 10+2 from Halali Class-XII School, Kamalpur in Tripura and continued his study for degree course from Ramkrishna Mahavidyalaya, Kailasahar, Tripura but could not complete his degree course. While he was studying his degree course, he decided to acquire formal training in Vocal (Classical) and took admission in Kailasahar Music School. He completed the Visharad Course in Vocal(Classical) in 1st Class under Lucknow University in 1997.

Most Memorable and Precious Moment for Sushanta:
Sushanta, from his childhood was very keen to meet Shri Anup Jalota and his desire was fulfilled in June 1998 when he left his home village and reached Mumbai to meet Shri Jalota at his residence at Shivaji Park, Dadar, Mumbai. Shri Anup Jalota was very much impressed on Sushanta's performance and spotted his talent of singing(gayaki) style, melodious voice, determination, dedication, sacrifice and in-depth knowledge of classical music. He was also glad to know Sushanta's desire to learn more and develop his quality of singing under his close guidance & supervision and accepted Sushanta as his disciple.

His Performances :
On 14th August, 1998, Sushanta got an opportunity to give a live solo performance of singing Bhajan in presence of Shri Anup Jalota. That day was the lime light for Sushanta which brought a change in his singing career and got his dream fulfilled to perform in front of Shri Anup Jalota.

On 24th August, 2000, he gave another solo live performance of Bhajan in presence of Shri Anup Jalota for about one hour at ISKCON Auditorium, Mumbai. That day Anup Jalota expressed his happiness and appreciated Sushanta's outstanding singing performance with his melodious voice and blessed him before audience saying that "Sushant will be known as Bhajan Singer just next to him". He was also addressed as "Chote Anup" by 'Bhajan Samraat" Shri Purushottam Das Jalota (Papaji), father of Shri Anup Jalota. Sushanta also got opportunity to sing Bhajan along with "Papaji" on many auspicious occasions. By name Sushanta is also called as "Sushant" by his guruji and his fans.

After that Sushanta got many opportunities to show his talent through many live concerts of Bhajans and Ghazals at different places viz. Mumbai, Delhi, Chandigarh, Allahabad, Calcutta etc and different places in Bangladesh like Dhaka, Sylhet etc. He has given over total 300 live stage performances during last 12 years. Out of them, he has performed 50 solo and Jugal Bandi performance in presence of and also along with Shri Anup Jalota. His performance in presence of Shri Purushuttam Das Jalota is 7. An exclusive programme named "SUSHANT NIGHT" was organized at different places where he won the hearts of his fans and audiences by singing best Bhajans, Ghazals & modern songs– 3 programs at Mumbai, 2 at Delhi, 2 at Allahabad, 1 at District Library/Silchar and 3 at Bangladesh.

He is also known to the famous Indian celebrities and got the opportunity to show his Bhajan and Ghazal performance in a Music Festival at Mumbai in 2002 in presence of them like Lata Mangeskar, Jagdish Singh, Anup Jalota, Kumar Sanu, Pandit Jasraj, Hema Malini, Shiv Kumar Sarma, Hari Prasad Chaurasia, Anuradha Padwal, Bappi Lahiri etc. who had appreciated his singing talent very much.

Some of his notable performances were as under :-
1. In July, 2001 he performed his first Jugal-bandi performance with Shri Anup Jalota at Vaidas Hall at Juhu, Mumbai.

2. On 14th Aug, 2001 in an occasion of Shree Shree Krishna Janmastami at ISKCON/New Delhi, he was felicitated with a Trophy by the President of ISKCON/New Delhi as "Chote Anup" for his excellent Bhajan singing.

3.On 24th Aug, 2002, in a musical festival in Mumbai on Shree Shree Krishna Janmastami at ISKCON he was felicitated by a trophy as "Jr. Anup Jalota" from ISKCON, Mumbai.

4. On 16th February, 2004 at Sylhet of Bangladesh, Sushant was felicitated and honoured as "Bhajan Samraat" for his excellent solo performance of Bhajan singing by City Mayor of Sylhet, Bangladesh.

5. On 10th Oct, 2007 he was felicitated & honoured as "Bhajan Samraat" along with a appreciation letter as "First Bishnupriya Manipuri Classical Bhajan and Ghazal singer" by POURI, a Bishnupriya Manipuri International Organization who works on Bishnupriya Manipuri society, culture and language.

6. On 19th July, 2008 in Dhaka Club of Bangladesh, Sushant gave his first Ghazal & Thumri performance for about continuous 3 hours by singing the famous Ghazals of Shri Anup Jalota, Shri Medhi Hasan & Shri Ghulam Ali. In this performance, he was again felicitated as "Bhajan Singer" by the then MP of Bangladesh.

7. On 05th February, 2009, again in the Dhaka Club of Bangladesh, he gave a live "Jugal-Bandi" performance of Ghazals along with Shri Anup Jalota which was heartily appreciated by all audience and his fans of Bangladesh.

8. He has worked as a Radio artist at All India Radio Centre, Tripura as Bhajan Singer for continuous 5 years w.e.f 1994.

9. His Bhajan performances were telecasted in Door Darshan, Tripura w.e.f 2005 to till date.

10. His many bhajans performances were telecasted in Sony TV, Etc TV, Astha TV, Sanskar TV. One of his bhajan performance was telecasted for 3 years from 2000-2003 by ITV of Sony in a spiritual program named "AATMA" at 6:00 am daily.
Apart from singing, he has interest in writing novels, writing and composing songs in his mother tongue i.e. Bishnupriya Manipuri and also Hindi, singing self composed bhajans & ghazals, modern classical songs in Bishnupriya Manipuri and Hindi etc. He has an immense desire to add a new singing(gayaki) style to the songs of Bishnupriya Manipuri by his self composed bhajans and ghazals in the classical(shastriya) style of singing. He also likes to sing Ghazals of other renowned Ghazal singers like Medhi Hassan, Ghulam Ali etc. and his dedicated excellence singing performance was appreciated by both masses and discerning audiences.

He had released some audio and video recorded CDs of Bhajans like – 'Bhajan Murti', 'Fulsajja' & 'Bhakti Manjuri' in Bishnupriya Manipuri language and Bhajan Radhika, Mat Kar Tu Abhimaan (Hari Se Bada Harinaam), Bhajan Lalita etc in Hindi language. In one of his Bhajan album "Mat Kar Tu Abhimaan", Shri Anup Jalota in his voice has introduced Sushanta as his disciple and appreciated his singing talent and blessed him for a successful career.

Sushanta's passion for singing didn't wither and still giving his live performances by touring to different places. His ultimate desire is to devote his life in singing and touch the heart and soul of his fans by his melodious voice and give more furnishing in his singing style in a most charming manner adding in the beauty of Bhajans and Ghazals. He is trying hard to achieve a platform to establish and explore his voice of songs. He is encouraged by everyone to continue his singing and achieve success in his career.

He needs a platform to make himself as a established singer and fulfill his dreams in this field in future. I hope his in-depth knowledge of classical music will make his singing & voice more richer and those who enjoy the essence of music will find him captivating. His singing will grow on the music lovers - the more we listen to him, the more we will like his voice.

In this site/blog apart from his introduction, I have tried to upload and list out some of his recorded audios of Bhajans and other songs. I will try to add more of his various performances and recordings whenever they are available with me. I am hoping to make it the most exhaustive & complete collection of his Bhajans, Ghazals, Thumris & other modern songs sung by Shri Sushanta.

This blog/site can be used as a promoting site for Shri Sushanta and his songs. It is a small effort made by me to introduce Shri Sushanta and his excellent talent to the music lovers.
